English & Civics Requirements

You must demonstrate that you:

  • can speak, read, and write basic English, and
  • know basic facts about civics, that is, U.S. history and government.

You must be able to answer questions on your application, write a sentence in English and read a sentence in English.

You must answer 12 questions correctly out of 20 on the civics test. Applicants should study from a list of 128 possible questions. The list of questions and answers is on the USCIS website at USCIS.gov — Citizenship Resource Center.
